Where to stay in Varanasi: best areas and a hotel near Kashi Vishwanath (2026)
Stay in the old city near Kashi Vishwanath Temple if this is your first trip to Varanasi — the temple, Kaal Bhairav, Dashashwamedh Ghat and the evening Ganga Aarti are all walkable, and you avoid the traffic around Godowlia. Hotel Shubha Inn, 400 m from Kashi Vishwanath, has Deluxe King Rooms from ₹1,699 a night including GST, bookable with live availability on GhatGo.
The three areas most visitors choose
1. Old city — Kashi Vishwanath, Godowlia and Dashashwamedh
The heart of Banaras. Kashi Vishwanath, Kaal Bhairav, Annapurna and the main ghats are all within walking distance, and so is the boarding point for most boat rides and the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh.
- Best for: first-time visitors, pilgrims, short trips of 1–3 days.
- Good to know: lanes are narrow and busy; cars often stop on the main road and you walk the last few minutes.
2. Assi Ghat and around BHU
The southern end of the ghats is quieter, with cafés, yoga at sunrise and the Subah-e-Banaras programme. It is a good base for longer stays, but Kashi Vishwanath and Dashashwamedh are a ride away, and evening traffic can be slow.
- Best for: longer stays, travellers who want a calmer base.
3. Cantonment and near the railway station
Larger hotels with parking and wide roads, close to Varanasi Junction. Every visit to the ghats means a cab or auto through the city, so it suits business travel or a one-night stopover more than a pilgrimage.
- Best for: early trains, travellers with a car, business trips.

Staying for Dev Deepawali or New Year
Dev Deepawali (24 November 2026) and the Christmas–New Year week are the busiest stretches of the year in the old city. Book your room as soon as your dates are fixed, arrive the day before the festival, and pair the stay with the Dev Deepawali boat ride — read the Dev Deepawali trip planner for a full 3-day plan.
